Disaster Recovery

Our daily work is more and more based on computer systems. Some applications can be considered "mission critical": if they crash or do not work properly, there can be serious consequences for the business performance. Therefore, it is crucial to put a plan in place in order to guarantee adequate business continuity. Usually, this implies the creation of a secondary infrastructure that can replace the main one if necessary. Besides the associated costs, there are also problems deriving from maintenance, obsolescence and management that can be quite expensive to solve.

Disaster Recovery used to be placed in the physical layer. Clouditalia's Disaster Recovery services, created in partnership with Zerto, represent the Disaster Recovery tool based on Hypervisor. Clouditalia offers a completely virtual replication of its environments, based exclusively on software technology. The offer consists of three different types of service:
  • Disaster Recovery
  • Disaster Recovery as a service
  • Porting

RPO = seconds
RTO = minutes

Disaster Recovery

Guarantee business continuity and store documents and data that are crucial for both companies and the Public Administration means being able to foresee the unforeseeable. This is the aim of geographical disaster recovery and especially of the Disaster Recovery service offered by Clouditalia.
The final aim of the service is to break the link between the datacenter safety and the specific events (calamities and others) of a territory.
Disaster recovery is a crucial component of the activities aimed at ensuring operational continuity; this is why it needs to be conceived taking into account some fundamental elements:
  • Distance between two sites – Clouditalia attests the organizations that subscribed the DR service in the data centers of Milan and Rome, thus ensuring the compliance with the provisions envisaged by the CNIPA "Reviews n° 35, February 2008, Operational continuity in public administration".
  • Connection between two sites - Connection between two Disaster Recovery sites must be able to guarantee a minimal impact on daily work activities that cannot be influenced by the alignment of the two sites. Impact should be minimum also in case of use of the recovery service. More specifically, the connections between the two DR sites are made on dedicated DWDM connections:
    - Milan - Rome 670 Km on two geographically diversified routes
The routes between Rome and Milan are made using 10 Gbit/s connections in DWDM.
The lambda 10Gbit/s form a meshed topology between the two Nexus 7000 in each of the two sites, so that each Nexus sees the other two of the other site via a short and a long route.
The Disaster Recovery service managed by CloudItalia uses Zerto technology; the service takes into account the following aspects:
  • synchrony policy: the service ensures a RTO close to 5 seconds and a RPO of only a few minutes
  • impact on the resources being used: Zerto service works on the Hypervisor through a software platform; this guarantees minimum impact on the resources of the first site
  • granular management of the service: thanks to Clouditalia DR service, you can also install a Virtual Machine on the two sites
  • control platform: both the installation and management of the service are ensured by a platform accessible via browser that can be consulted by any device connected to the Internet. The platform ensures real time control of the two sites, besides allowing periodic inspections on the recovery organization

DRAAS

Disaster Recovery

Disaster Recovery as a service

Clouditalia solution allows combining the advantages of private cloud and the power and responsiveness of our infrastructure. It doesn't need direct interventions on your infrastructure. You will simply have to install a software on your vCenter; this will coordinate the service and will allow the control of both the service and the data center in cloud.
No agent needs to be installed on the virtual machines.
The Service "Data Recovery as a Service" creates a dedicated environment within Clouditalia Data Centers (as a replication of Private Cloud).
The client can easily manage and monitor the alignment of the replication thus created.
If necessary, the autostart function is available for the entire virtual environment, or a part of it, on Clouditalia Data Centers; your internal infrastructure will be thus replaced by one provided by cloud. Once the cause of the default has been solved, an inverse process can be put in place in order to restart local machines starting from the content on cloud while keeping full data alignment as well as of the whole application infrastructure.

How it works

The service implies the installation on the client's vCenter of a software that allows the connection to Clouditalia Data Centers. The operator can directly manage all alignment, replication and timing policies by mean of a console. This also allows the selection of the virtual environment on which to install the service (even on the single machine).
No agent or software need to be installed on the single virtual machines.

Synchrony policies

The choice of the virtual machines on which to activate the Disaster Recovery can be made through a console. It is also possible to define both the alignment and the delay policies (they can vary from 5 seconds up to 24 hours).

Activation of the Cloud-Based environment Cloud

In case you have to reboot one or more machines on your cloud data center, it is possible to act autonomously and decide the version you want to align to. Thanks to an overview of the past 24 hours, you can decide to activate your environment in any of the images previously synchronized.

Cloud environment

The replication on your Clouditalia Data Center is accessible at all times. Virtual machines are off during normal operation but the user can access them, turn them on and even use them while the other machines are on in local mode.

Porting

Disaster Recovery

Porting

Relocating your IT infrastructure on Clouditalia is as easy as it sounds.
You will be able to manage your resources dynamically, benefiting from scalability that ensures a cloud datacenter; what's more, you will only pay for the resources you actually use. Simple, yet not banal.
The decision implies drawing up a migration plan that needs to take into account factors such as: how to handle the relocation of resources; which approach to use and which risks must be considered to manage at best the problems that may arise.
The solution offered by Clouditalia consists in turning to Zerto, leader company in the Disaster Recovery services and data migration.

The migration project, or porting, consist of three stages:
  • Performance and data collection of the starting infrastructure
  • set-up of the destination: definition of the networks, laaS organizations and infrastructure assessment
  • porting: data transfer, log verification, IP pointing, general test for the final assessment of the destination
